Hispanic or Latino: Which term is correct?

Hispanics are the largest minority group in the United States, yet many Hispanics “do not identify with the current racial categories,” according to the Pew Research Center. That’s because the term — often used interchangeably with “Latino” — covers people from a sprawling geographic area who may have distinct cultural differences.

Living in East Lansing as a Muslim

Lansing area Muslims say they’re seeing increasing hostility toward their community. Nationally, anti-Muslim assaults in 2015 reached the highest level since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. There were 91 aggravated or simple assaults motivated by anti-Muslim bias in 2015, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of FBI hate crime statistics. That was a 63 percent increase over the previous year and the highest since 93 were reported in 2001.

The plan for Realize Cedar

The Delhi Township has been planning for a new downtown area on Cedar Street for project known as “Realize Cedar”. The timeline for when the project will be started and completed is still vague because it is still in the planning stages. “The Township plans to begin working on engineering for some of the public infrastructure parts of the project in 2017,” said Miller. Although actual implementation of this would not start until 2018. The community members hope that the downtown area will become more popular, and more shops and restaurants will open when this project is done.

When it comes to Donald Trump, his “Make America Great Again” hashtag is trending with 330,000+ tweets. While Hillary Clinton’s “I’m With Her” hashtag has 390,000+ tweets. Overall 450,000+ people have tweeted @realDonaldTrump and 290,000+ people have tweeted @HillaryClinton. With Trump’s tweet, “TODAY WE MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” receiving 190,000+ retweets, making it today’s most retweeted tweet on twitter.

Who is winning the social media race? Presidential candidates’ morning on Facebook

Donald Trump is winning the Facebook popularity race as of 11 a.m. with his two posts receiving more than double the likes than Clinton’s six posts. Since the polls opened at 7 a.m., Trump has had over 102,000 shares, 527,000  likes, and 40,000 comments. With Clinton having over 45,000 shares, 241,000 likes, and 11,000 comments. Despite the fact Clinton has posted more than the Republican candidate, Trump’s two posts have had significantly more positive social media attention. With Trump leading the social media race on Facebook all week, his total likes surpassing Clinton’s by two million.

New coordinator at DDA board in Delhi

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality introduced Janet Michaluk as their new coordinator during the Downtown Development Authority meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Michaluk will act as a resource to the authority and the community, providing information and environmental developments within the Delhi township. The regions that Michaluk has been assigned to are Gratiot County, Lapeer County, Genesse County, Shiawassee County, South Central Prosperity Region and Livingston County.  

 

“I’m here to get out to the community and be a resource,” said Michaluk during the meeting.
