Following the example set by the Shel Siverstein story “The Giving Tree,” the Giving Tree Farm gives to as many people as its can.

The organic farm, which grows produce on seven acres and in eight hoop houses, is among local vendors that sells produce at Allen Farmers Market located in Lansing’s eastside neighborhood.

Starting the mid ‘90s, Community Based Interventions, a nonprofit organization, created Giving Tree Farm to provide training and rehabilitation work for people with disabilities.

“In the future we would like to focus on the crops that those with cognitive disabilities could do,” said farm manager Matthew Romans. “Simple hand work, something that they would enjoy doing.”
