Pancake making is no easy business

Young Scouts were put to work early Saturday morning at 2|42 Church, 2600 Bennett Road, greeting hungry faces at the door and serving empty bellies hot pancakes.

Ted Ferris, a former Scoutmaster of Troop 164 in Okemos, said leadership training is a big part of Scouts, and young members run most of the events.

“It builds self-reliance and self-confidence,” said Ferris. “They don’t get that as much in school, but in youth organizations they tend to get more responsibility.”

First-ever female Scout group to attend

New to the event was the female Scout group of Okemos. Marla Ekola, a Scouts BSA (Boy Scouts of America) volunteer, said the group of five started last month and are eager to earn their ranks.

“They go through all the ranks and all the requirements for … what would be Boy Scouts,” said Ekola. “All five of my girls currently are scouts rank, and they will be tenderfoot after this week.”
