Katie Ann Lambert, a native of Michigan, had been traveling across the country for eight years, from Colorado to Hawaii and after working for someone else, she decided she wanted her own.
So Mitten Raised Bakery that once was an idea finally became reality.
“My brother actually came up with the name. After going back and forth about it, I came back to where I was from so the name stuck,” said Lambert.
Lambert bought the store last year and planned to open this past December but with a few hiccups hopes to open her store in mid March.
“The store has little details in like the sink but I have no counter tops or anything else. For me it’s a huge deal to see it come along but some it would be an empty room,” said Lambert.
The addition of new businesses has been huge for Meridian Township.
Mark Kieselbach, the director of community planning and development said, “Sites that are downgraded are going to want to upgrade and look new but new developments will also help provide more business for the town.”
New businesses like Mitten Raised Bakery are helping the community around them by adding business as well as making the community like downtown Okemos seem alive.
“I couldn’t be more happier, I’ve just been waiting for something to happen to downtown Okemos it looks dead,” said Vivian Dwyer. Dwyer owns a paint store next door and has seen the town around her store diminish over time.
“In Okemos there is no there is no competition, there is no wonderful bakeries or anything, so I’m real excited. It would also be wonderful to work together when I have parties and need a cake I could just ask her to make it,” said Dwyer.
Members of the community share their excitement on Mitten Raised Facebook page with comments asking when the store is opening and sharing their comments of pictures posted by Lambert on cakes, cupcakes and little sweets that they have seen on the sight.
Christina Kuhnmuench, a member of the community bought a cake from the Lambert for a birthday party.
“For me it is really exciting for Mitten Raised Bakery to come to the area! I am looking forward to the unique sweets, baked goods and gorgeous cakes!” said Kuhnmuench.
With much interest as people in the community have for the opening of Mitten Raised Bakery; Lambert said she is excited and ready to open her store and just bake.
But Lambert has plans for the future as well.
“I want to expand. I want to franchise. I want to go up north more and have different shops in the Midwest,” Said Lambert.
