Divisions in presidential election spills over into school hallways

An Okemos freshman bullied by a group of boys —in the heat of a divisive national election year.

The chant, “lock her up” rang through the halls at Okemos High School, the Thursday after Election Day. Susan Demas, mother of the student at which others were chanting, says the school has been responsive to the situation. The boys were disciplined, though information on their punishment was not released by school officials.

Okemos Superintendent Doctor Catherine Ash says the district followed its normal bullying procedures, which encourage students to have “civil discourse” when discussing politics. Both Ash and Demas say the national conversation about the election has not done young minds any favors — and may encourage this type of behavior.
