It’s been over a week since the opening of the new Chick-fil-A, and traffic has not slowed down yet.

“There was just a lot of excitement for the new Chick-fil-A Restaurant,” said Matt Adair. He and about 100 others camped outside of the restaurant to get a years worth of free meals.

Some customers camped there for over 24 hours. Adair says that he had been there since 6 a.m. the previous day. He was in the first 100 to receive the prize.

Other customers just got lucky.

Shwanna Wilson and a group of others showed up at 4 a.m. for a free meal coupon, just a few hours before the open. She says she didn’t expect people to wait outside for 24 hours.

“We barely made it,” said Wilson. “They just came outside and said we have five slots left.”

Many residents were anticipating the store opening for quite a while.

“I was actually one of the first people to post it on Facebook, before the media caught on about a month or so ago,” said Wilson. “They even came on my page and thanked me.”

“One of our PR team had somebody say ‘I’ve been waiting for Chick-fil-A to come to Michigan for 40 years’,” said store owner Kate McNerney.

A few hours after the Lansing opening, another store opened at Somerset Mall in Troy.

Plans are in the works for more stores to open in Michigan in the next year.
