Valu Land is the newest grocery store in Lansing Township and the fourth to open in Michigan.
Opened in May on 3800 West Saginaw, Valu Land occupies the building where Pureless Furniture used to be. Situated in-between a Volunteers of America Thrift Store and a Family Dollar that opened in January, Valu Land brings even more value to this newly renovated strip mall.
“Unlike our competition Aldi, another discount grocer, we offer a full produce department with a much more extensive meat department featuring fresh daily butchered meat,” said Weston. “And unlike other discount grocers, we carry a selection of national brands in addition to our Spartan brand and our value brand called Valu Time.”
Valu Land is the latest line of small-format discount grocery stores owned and operated by Spartan Stores, a Grand Rapids based food distributor and grocery chain. In addition to Valu Land, Spartan Stores runs 96 Michigan based supermarkets including D&W Fresh Markets, Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen’s Markets and VG’s Food and Pharmacy.
As a value focused grocery store, Valu Land provides customers with an in-store sales that changes every other week in addition to a selection of 14 staples including items such as milk, bread, and bananas offered at an everyday low price.
“I used to go to Kroger a lot,” said Kerri Vent, a Lansing Township resident. “But after Valu Land opened closer to my home, I found that their prices were very comparable and cheaper for everyday staples such as milk. Now I always come here to get my groceries.”
February marks Spartan Stores’ 60th anniversary of their Spartan brand products. The first Spartan product introduced was their Spartan brand coffee. Now with almost 2,000 Spartan brand products, the brand has expanded to offer a wider variety of items that can be found in nearly every section of their grocery stores. In celebration of Spartan brand’s anniversary, ten of the most popular Spartan products will have limited edition 1950’s red and yellow retro packaging featuring the Spartan brand warrior.
“I really like shopping at Valu Land because of their low prices and simple set up,” said Thomas Dobson, a Lansing Township resident. “I am a big fan of their Spartan brand products because they are a lot cheaper than the national brands but in my opinion they are just as good or even better in quality.”
The Spartan Winter Sale also begins in February during which Spartan brand products go on sale for an even lower price than their average pricing of 20 percent less than the national brands.
“Since the L&L Shoprite closed about a year and a half ago, this area has been in need of another local grocery store,” said Julie Neal, Lansing Township Valu Land assistant manager. “Our customers are always complimenting us on our store cleanliness and hospitable customer service. When people need to pick up just a few things, our small format and everyday low prices makes a quick trip to the store a much faster and more affordable process.”
